Our updated Sloppy Joe takes lean ground beef and adds chopped cremini mushrooms and diced fresh plum tomatoes, all in a zesty sauce. Served on a whole-wheat bun, it’s a hearty dinner sandwich that will please adults and kids alike.
Makes 8 servings, generous 1/2 cup filling each
ACTIVE TIME: 35 minutes
TOTAL TIME: 45 minutes
EASE OF PREPARATION: Easy
12 ounces 90%-lean ground beef
1 large onion, finely diced
2 cups finely chopped cremini mushrooms (about 4 ounces)
5 plum tomatoes, diced
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1/2 cup water
1/4 cup cider vinegar
1/4 cup chili sauce, such as Heinz
1/4 cup ketchup
8 whole-wheat hamburger buns, toasted if desired
1. Crumble beef into a large nonstick skillet; cook over medium heat until it starts to sizzle, about 1 minute. Add onion and mushrooms and cook, stirring occasionally, breaking up the meat with a wooden spoon, until the vegetables are soft and the moisture has evaporated, 8 to 10 minutes.
2. Add tomatoes and flour; stir to combine. Stir in water, vinegar, chili sauce and ketchup and bring to a simmer, stirring often. Reduce heat to a low simmer and cook, stirring occasionally, until the sauce is thickened and the onion is very tender, 8 to 10 minutes. Serve warm on buns.

A great family meal.

Yummy nostalgia food, and easy to make. Slightly sweet and tangy, with a touch of heat from the chili sauce (we used Maggi SOS Cili Chili Sauce). Since we made it in winter, we used (Muir Glen) canned plum tomatoes instead of fresh. The following day, we had the leftovers on pasta instead of buns. Try it!

I love this recipe. It tastes so fresh!

This was great! My kids gobbled it up and my son asked for seconds. I felt really good feeding this to them, since it was loaded with veggies. They liked them the second day even better. The only thing we didn't like was the apple cider vinegar. We all agreed that should be left out. That would also make is less sloppy (we like our joes to be fairly thick!) Great recipe!

It was a little too vinegar tasting for us, so next time I won't add as much. Otherwise it was very good and even my mushroom hating husband brought the leftovers for his lunch!

These were really very good - they got rave reviews at my house which isn't very common with my "makeover" type recipies.

This was excellent! One of the best sloppy joes I've ever had. I did take into consideration other's comments and only added a splash of the vinegar. Even my very picky kids liked it. I will definitely make this again!

It was good, I followed the above suggestions. It was kind of runny but its "sloppy" joe.

My son did this for his exam piece. It went well not sure of his mark yet. It tasted great and we also left out the vinegar.

Made these for dinner and WOW!!!!!!! Awesome - even hubby who was a lifelong hater of sloppy joes loved them!!

This turned out "just okay" for me. Suggest you try making sloppy joes with the Barbecue Sauce made by Montebello Kitchens. www.Montebellokitchens.com Fantastic taste. They use apple butter in their sauce and my friends ate a lot more than usual. Good friends and good healthy food = Best Recipe!

I tried this recipe yasterday, and it was really nice, i hade my cousin staying over and we both liked it very much plus my brother who is a big time veggi hater didnt even mind the presence of the tomatow pieces there and enjoyed the meal, so its now officialy one of my favourites.

These were very easy to make and quite tasty. I didn't use the mushrooms as I am not a fan and it still turned out great. They reheat well too.

Excellent! I didn't even ever care for the traditional canned sloppy joes but this recipe looked good so I thought I'd give it a try - my family loved it and it is now a regular in our house!

We like this recipe so much that it's become a standard. It's fast and it makes great leftovers. We only use about two tbsp of vinegar. I snuck in carrots once. They were already cooked so I smushed them up and added them in and no one was any wiser.
My pals at work have asked for this recipe because it smells amazing when it's heating up in the office microwave.
