High Blood Pressure Diet Recipes and Menus

Enjoy these healthy recipes for a high blood pressure diet.

There’s no “magic bullet” for preventing high blood pressure, but a smart diet and regular exercise can go a long way toward keeping it at a healthy level. EatingWell food and nutrition editors have cooked up a variety of delicious and healthy recipes for high blood pressure.

Aim for a varied menu including high-potassium foods like fruits, vegetables and low-fat dairy, as well as lean meats and fish. Try to avoid lots of sodium, saturated fats and excessive alcohol intake (alcohol can raise blood pressure, although no one knows exactly why). Maintaining a healthy weight is good insurance, too—experts say that losing 10 percent of your current weight can help lower blood pressure.

Our “blood-pressure friendly” recipes are reduced in sodium—most of the main dishes here (including soups and salads) have 480 mg or less, while breads, desserts and side dishes have less than 360 mg of sodium. When a recipe is high in potassium (525 mg or more) we allow for a slightly higher sodium count of 650 mg. Additionally, we've selected recipes that are low in cholesterol and high in fiber (5 g or more).

Enjoy these healthy recipes for a high blood pressure diet from the EatingWell kitchen.

I am trying to develop an eating plan for my family but I have a dilemma: My husband is 55 with Arthritis and a little over weight; I am 44 with High Blood Pressure and a little over weight; Our son is 4.5! How can I create family meals without risking my son's health? We are also trying to cut meat & dairy from our diets, although our son still drinks milk. Thanks in advance for any help!! Tracey

I am from Canada and have been fighting h.b. but keep it under control. You want to go off meat and dairy... well not a good thing but you can tone it down to a few days a week and take one a veggie kind of diet... a good recipe I use often and my grandkids enjoy plus is great for the blood pressure is a lentil and rice casserole. With a salad and brown roll to round it out... If you would like the recipe I will post it here. It's my own and my Doctor cleared it for kids.

I am very grateful that you have a diet I can try for my high blood pressure.

I have recently been diagnosed with high blood pressure and would like to know what kinds of food would be good for me to eat. Thank you.

My husband recently had a heart attack. He is on a low cholesterol low sodium diet. We are also watching our fat intake. What is the limit of saturated fat a day. What is a good number for cholesterol intake a day? Please help me. I am running out of ideas on what to cook.
