Healthy Pea Recipes and Cooking Tips



Popped-from-the-pod recipes for everyone’s favorite vegetable.

With the growing number of farmstands, farmers' markets, community supported agriculture (CSA) farms and specialty stores, the fresh pea is back in business. Fresh peas are at their peak in late spring and early summer. They do well in the garden when the evenings are still cool or even with a touch of frost at night. Peas shine in these easy, delicious recipes and will have your family begging you to pass the (fresh) peas, please.

Peas freeze incredibly well, a fact that has, in some ways, worked against them. Oh, frozen peas are sweet, and they are certainly convenient, but when it comes to natural sweetness, firm texture and eye appeal, you can’t beat fresh.

Pea Shopping and Cooking Tips

Look for peas with light, bright coloring without any brown, bruised, withering ends. If there’s not a great selection at your local supermarket, check Asian produce markets or farmer’s markets.

Nutritionally, peas can hold their own—they are a good source of fiber and have more protein (4 grams per serving) than most vegetables.
